Breeding system and pollination of Pleroma trichopodum DC. (Melastomataceae): a potential species for the restoration of Atlantic Forest in southern Brazil Acta Botanica
Malucelli,Tiago Simões; Maia,Fabiano Rodrigo; Varassin,Isabela Galarda.
ABSTRACT Plant-pollinator interactions and their reproductive implications are of central importance to the organization of plant populations and communities in restoration areas. We studied the breeding system and flower visitors of Pleroma trichopodum, a pioneer species of the Atlantic Forest. We attempted to answer three questions: (1) Is P. trichopodum dependent on pollinators and mates for reproduction? (2) What are the pollinators of P. trichopodum? (3) Do tree flower-density and flowering-tree density of P. trichopodum enhance the visitation rate of focal trees and their flowers? We tested the breeding system through pollination treatments. We performed focal observations on 10 trees and analyzed the relationship between tree and flower visitation...

ClonEstiMate, a Bayesian method for quantifying rates of clonality of populations genotyped at two-time steps ArchiMer
Becheler, Ronan; Masson, Jean-pierre; Arnaud-haond, Sophie; Halkett, Fabien; Mariette, Stephanie; Guillemin, Marie-laure; Valero, Myriam; Destombe, Christophe; Stoeckel, Solenn.
Partial clonality is commonly used in Eukaryotes and has large consequences for their evolution and ecology. Assessing accurately the relative importance of clonal versus sexual reproduction matters for studying and managing such species. Here, we proposed a Bayesian approach, ClonEstiMate, to infer rates of clonality c from populations sampled twice over a short time interval, ideally one generation time. The method relies on the likelihood of the transitions between genotype frequencies of ancestral and descendent populations, using an extended Wright-Fisher model explicitly integrating reproductive modes. Our model provides posterior probability distribution of inferred c, given the assumed rates of mutation, as well as inbreeding and selfing when...

Depression by inbreeding after four sucessive self-pollination squash generations Scientia Agricola
Cardoso,Antonio Ismael Inácio.
The strategy for breeding F1 hybrid squash is to develop parental lines through self-pollination. However, it increases plant mean homozygosis, which is not the natural genetic state of a cross-pollinated species, and can cause "inbreeding depression". The objective of this work was to evaluate this depression with sucessive generations of self-pollination (without selection) in Cucurbita moschata, cv. Piramoita. Populations were obtained from lines with one to four generations of self-pollination (obtained by the SSD method), from the original cv. Piramoita (population S0). Randomized blocks were used with five treatments (different generations of self-pollination - S0 to S4), six replicates and five plants per plot. Regression analysis was made by the...

METHOD FOR OVERCOMING THE PASSION FRUIT SELF-INCOMPATIBILITY Rev. Bras. Frutic.
LIRA JÚNIOR,JOSÉ SEVERINO DE; BRUCKNER,CLÁUDIO HORST; CARNEIRO,PEDRO CRESCÊNCIO SOUZA.
ABSTRACT The methodology of self-pollination of passion fruit flowers at anthesis after stigma excision was proposed. This method was compared with self-pollination procedures at anthesis and at the stage of flower bud. Two genotypes (M7 and N9), propagated by cuttings were studied. Self-pollinations were performed at 1 pm, 1 pm and 5 pm or 5 pm. Fruit set (%), fruit mass (g), pulp mass (g), pulp/fruit ratio and seed number per fruit were evaluated and compared to fruits derived from M7 x N9 and N9 x M7 crosses. No fruit set was obtained from self-pollination at anthesis, which confirms the self-incompatibility of both genotypes. Self-pollination after stigma excision was the best procedure, reaching average fruit set of 73.61 % (13 hours) and 81.94 %...
